About Safety HarborSafety Harbor's county, Pinellas, is an official "Save Haven" community. Over the last two decades, Equality Florida has worked to pass fully inclusive Human Rights Ordinances across Florida. Today, 40 local Human Rights Ordinances protect roughly 56% of Florida’s population due to our efforts and regional partners' efforts. These ordinances create “Safe Haven” communities that protect transgender people from discrimination in the areas of employment, housing, and public accommodations. These protections have never been more critical and laid the foundation for the passage of a statewide non-discrimination law, The Florida Competitive Workforce Act. In June 2024, Joseph Ayoub, Mayor of the City of Safety Harbor, Florida, and the City Commission proclaimed the month of June 2024 to be PRIDE MONTH (LGBTQIA+) in the City of Safety Harbor and honors the resilience of LGBTQIA+ people, who are fighting to live authentically and freely. Conference Team Florida organizers asked the President of Safety Harbor PFLAG about the safety of LGBTQ+ visitors while staying in Safety Harbor. This is how they responded: Thank you for reaching out to PFLAG Safety Harbor. While I understand the concerns around traveling to Florida, there is no immediate danger to LGBTQ+ people visiting Safety Harbor and surrounding areas. PFLAG has hosted community events and personally had outings at our downtown establishments with LGBTQ+ people, including same-sex couples, Trans folks, and nonbinary people. We have never had any safety concerns in Safety Harbor or surrounding areas. We even had a Trans and Ally picnic at a local Safety Harbor County Park with over 200 people in attendance.
I offer some candid tips and suggested places to visit:
The bottom line is that PFLAG has never had issues, and we would be willing to shop and dine downtown anywhere in Safety Harbor.
